SENTINEL SERIES · Ducted Cooling Unit

Wine Guardian DP50 Pro: Self-Contained Ducted Cooling for Cellars of 650 to 3,000 Cubic Feet

The Wine Guardian DP50 is a self-contained, air-cooled Pro-series ducted wine cellar cooling unit that delivers 6,320 BTU/h at 80°F condenser inlet air, measured with the cellar held at 57°F and 55% relative humidity, and holds the wine room anywhere in the 52°F to 70°F storage range Wine Guardian publishes for the Ducted Pro line.

Wine Guardian publishes the DP50 at 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h and sizes it for residential and commercial wine cellars of roughly 650 to 3,000 cubic feet. Volume alone does not size a cellar, though: glass area, the R-values and insulation materials the walls carry, door traffic and the temperature of the space the unit exhausts into all change the load, so run your own cellar dimensions and R-values through the wine cellar cooling calculator before you settle on a model.

Because the unit installs outside the wine room and connects through insulated ductwork, the cellar stays quiet and uncluttered, with every inch of space free for storage. The Pro platform adds high- and low-pressure switches, a refrigerant sight glass, 24-volt electronics and operation in cold ambient conditions that the standard ducted line does not carry. A feature-by-feature account of the Pro tier against the standard Sentinel ducted units covers where that package is worth specifying. As an authorized Wine Guardian dealer, we publish the DP50 with full manufacturer specifications so you can compare and size it correctly, and you can request a price quote with your cellar dimensions if you want a configuration checked before ordering.

Fit Check

Is the DP50 the Right Residential or Commercial Wine Cellar Cooling Unit for You?

The DP50 is the right unit for a wine cellar of roughly 650 to 3,000 cubic feet that has somewhere outside the room to hold a single chassis and exhaust its heat, with insulated supply and return ducts running into the cellar. Below that range the capacity is more than the room needs; above it, the DP88 is the correct starting point.

✓ Ideal For

  • Mid-sized wine cellars and storage rooms, roughly 650 to 3,000 cubic feet
  • Residential or light-commercial spaces needing more capacity than a small ducted unit
  • Installs that can route insulated ductwork to a unit located outside the cellar
  • Installations that want the Pro protection package: high- and low-pressure switches, an integral compressor crankcase heater and a refrigerant sight glass
  • Utility spaces that run cold in winter, since the ducted Pro units operate below 40°F ambient

✕ Consider Another Model If

  • Your cellar is under about 650 cubic feet (the DP25 is the better match)
  • Your cellar is larger than about 3,000 cubic feet (size up to the DP88)
  • There is nowhere outside the cellar to place a single chassis and exhaust its heat (consider a Pro ducted split)
  • Ventilation is severely limited (consider the water-cooled DP50WC configuration)
Key Features

DP50 Key Features as a Self-Contained Wine Cellar Cooling Unit

The DP50's defining features are its single-chassis self-contained design, the Pro platform's high- and low-pressure switches and refrigerant sight glass, and precision control to ±1°F and ±10% RH through the Wireless2Base remote interface controller.

Feature What it means for your cellar
Self-contained ducted design All components (evaporator, fans, compressor, condenser, controls) sit in one unit outside the cellar, so the wine room stays quiet and clutter-free.
Air-cooled heat rejection cooling Vents heat to a separate space outside the cellar, keeping the wine room cool, quiet, and undisturbed.
Pro high- and low-pressure switches Shut the system down before a refrigerant pressure problem damages the compressor if the system is undercharged, overcharged or leaking.
Refrigerant sight glass Shows the refrigerant volume at a glance, so a technician can diagnose a charge problem without gauges on the first visit.
Cold-ambient operation Wine Guardian rates the ducted Pro units for operation below 40°F ambient, so an unheated garage or basement is a workable location.
24-volt electronics The Pro control platform runs on 24-volt electronics, which is what allows the system to tie into Wi-Fi and smart-home integration.
Coated evaporator coil Protects the evaporator side against corrosion for durable, reliable performance over long service life.
Wireless2Base remote interface controller Monitors temperature and humidity continuously and corrects conditions before your wine is affected; place the controller in a kitchen, den, or elsewhere.
Precision control (±1°F / ±10% RH) Holds the setpoint to within ±1°F anywhere in the 52°F to 70°F storage range Wine Guardian publishes for the Ducted Pro line, with an optional humidifier for 55% to 65% relative humidity.
Aluminum chassis with UL-rated composite panels UL-rated composite panels are roughly five times stronger than before and resist dents and scratches during shipping and installation.
Field-serviceable, multi-panel access Panels, duct collars, and grille remove with a couple of screwdriver turns, so service happens on-site without returning the unit to the factory.
No refrigerant line work on site The sealed refrigerant circuit stays inside the single chassis, so installation is ductwork, a drain connection and power rather than field-brazed copper.
Optional bundles and humidification All Wine Temperatures, Extreme Climate Protection, and Ultimate bundles add heating, low/high ambient protection, and serving-temperature control as your space requires.

Built-in protection: the system continuously checks conditions through remote air sensing and adjusts before temperature or humidity drift can affect the collection.

How Quiet Is It

How Quiet Is the DP50 Ducted Unit?

Wine Guardian publishes no decibel rating for its ducted units, and the honest reason is that placement, not the unit, decides what you hear: the DP50 installs outside the wine room and connects through insulated ductwork, so the compressor and fans are never in the space you occupy. What reaches the cellar is air movement through a duct, not machinery.

  • The unit sits in a utility room, closet, or adjacent space, away from the cellar.
  • Internal components are mounted on rubber-in-shear isolators to reduce vibration and noise.
  • Flexible ductwork absorbs air noise, and sound drops further each time a duct run turns a corner.

How much of that advantage you actually get comes down to the layout, which is why planning duct runs and unit placement is worth settling before the equipment is ordered. Wine Guardian recommends a maximum cumulative length of 25 feet for the supply and return ducts combined, including bends. Anyone comparing quoted decibel figures between brands should treat an unqualified number with caution unless the measurement distance is stated with it.

Compare Across the Line

How the DP50 Compares to Other Ducted Wine Cellar Cooling Units

The DP50 is the middle of the Pro ducted line: choose it for cellars of 650 to 3,000 cubic feet, step down to the DP25 for smaller rooms, and step up to the DP88 for cellars of up to 4,500 cubic feet. The three units differ on cellar volume, capacity, compressor size and the electrical supply they need, not on the quality of the cooling.

Decision factor DP25 Pro ducted DP50 Pro ducted DP88 Pro ducted
Recommended cellar volume 250–2,000 ft³ 650–3,000 ft³ 850–4,500 ft³
Cooling capacity at 80°F condenser inlet air 3,760 BTU/h 6,320 BTU/h 9,420 BTU/h
Nominal compressor 0.33 HP 0.50 HP 1.0 HP
Electrical supply 115 V, single phase, 60 Hz 115 V, single phase, 60 Hz 208 V or 230 V, single phase, 60 Hz

Best for / not ideal for: choose the DP50 if the cellar is between about 650 and 3,000 cubic feet and a standard 115 V circuit is what you have to work with. Choose the DP25 for smaller rooms of 250 to 2,000 cubic feet if you would otherwise be oversizing. Choose the DP88 for cellars up to 4,500 cubic feet, accepting that it needs a 208 V or 230 V supply rather than 115 V. The DP50 is part of the Wine Guardian Pro series of ducted, water-cooled and split cooling systems; if you are shopping by room size instead of by installation type, compare it against the other cooling units for cellars of 2,200 to 4,500 cubic feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

DP50 Ducted Unit Questions

Where does the heat from the DP50 go, and how much space does that need?
The DP50 rejects its heat into whatever space the unit sits in, so Wine Guardian specifies exhausting that air outside or into a space at least three times larger than the wine room. The air reaching the condenser also has to stay within a safe operating range of 45°F to 95°F. A licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the location and the ventilation before the unit is ordered.
How far can the DP50 be ducted from the wine cellar?
Wine Guardian recommends a maximum cumulative length of 25 feet for the supply and return ducts combined, including bends. The DP50 uses 10 in ductwork on the evaporator side and 8 in on the condenser side, and every added foot and bend costs capacity, so the duct layout should be confirmed with a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor rather than sized to the minimum by default.
Does the DP50 add humidity, or only remove it?
Like any refrigeration-based cooling unit, the DP50 removes moisture as it cools; it displays humidity but does not raise it on its own. To actively hold 55% to 65% relative humidity, add an integrated or freestanding Wine Guardian humidifier, which connects to the ducted system and needs its own water supply and drain.
What does the DP50 need for condensate drainage?
The DP50 drains through a 0.50 in inside-diameter line run to an open floor drain or a condensate pump, pitched a quarter inch per linear foot, and Wine Guardian specifically says not to install an external trap on that line. Clogged or badly pitched drain lines are a common cause of overflow in wine rooms, so have a qualified contractor confirm the drain path before installation.
Does the DP50 need a licensed contractor to install?
A self-contained ducted unit is installed by connecting the ductwork, making the drain connection and supplying power, with no field refrigerant line work, so it is simpler than a split system. Wine Guardian still states that installation and maintenance are to be performed only by qualified personnel, and a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the final installation design, duct sizing and electrical requirements.
How much cooling capacity does the DP50 provide?
Wine Guardian publishes the DP50 at 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h, with the 6,320 BTU/h figure measured at 80°F condenser inlet air and the cellar held at 57°F and 55% relative humidity. Capacity rises as the air entering the condenser gets cooler, reaching 6,570 BTU/h at 70°F and 6,920 BTU/h at 60°F, and the full ladder to 120°F is in the specifications above. Final sizing should be confirmed with the Wine Guardian cooling calculator and a licensed HVAC professional.
Where does the DP50 get installed?
The DP50 is designed to sit outside the wine cellar, in a utility room, closet, or adjacent space, and connect through insulated ductwork. This keeps the cellar quiet and leaves all interior space free for wine storage, and it gives the condenser somewhere to reject heat other than the room you are cooling.
Is the DP50 covered by a warranty?
Yes. Wine Guardian's standard warranty is 25 months parts and 13 months labor. The Platinum warranty option is 25 months parts and 25 months labor, plus a 36-month parts-only extension on the compressor, evaporator coil, and condenser coil, for 61 months of coverage on those three components. Warranty registration and warranty service are handled through Wine Guardian as the manufacturer, and the full terms are in the warranty documents linked in the resources above.
