Does a wine cellar need a vapor barrier?
Yes. A cooled cellar needs a continuous vapor barrier, most commonly 6-mil polyethylene sheeting, on the warm side of the insulation across all walls and the ceiling. Without one, moisture condenses inside the assembly and causes mold and a rising cooling load.
How much insulation does a wine cellar need?
More than a normal room, because the cellar is held well below ambient temperature year round. Insulation level, vapor barrier, and glass area together determine the cooling load, which is why capacity should be calculated after the wall assembly is decided.
Can I build a wine cellar myself?
Framing, insulating, and finishing are within reach for an experienced builder. Cooling system selection, ducting, condensate handling, and electrical work are where most self built cellars run into trouble, and a licensed professional should confirm those before the walls close.
Does glass make a wine cellar harder to cool?
Yes, considerably. Glass conducts far more heat than an insulated wall, so a glass fronted or glass walled cellar needs greater cooling capacity for the same volume. Glass area is one of the three inputs that drive system sizing.
