Integrated Humidifier for Wine Storage Across D050 Through D200 Systems

The Wine Guardian 99H0173-30 is an integrated humidifier for wine storage that attaches to either side of a Sentinel Series D050, D088, D200 or matching DP, DS or SP cooling system, draws 24 Volt from that system and adds 0.42 to 1.0 lb/hr of moisture into the airstream rather than into the room.

A cooling system is not a humidifier. Wine Guardian states that a cooling unit alone cannot add moisture or humidity to cellar air, so a system that reads out relative humidity reports the condition without correcting it. This humidifier is the part that corrects it, and it earns its place only where the space measures dry.

Wine Guardian describes integrated humidifiers as adding moisture at the cooling system rather than directly in the wine space, gives them a suggested maximum of 60 percent relative humidity, and recommends a freestanding humidifier installed inside the wine space above that. As an authorized Wine Guardian dealer we sell it with Wine Guardian's own documentation and warranty; compatibility, plumbing and the electrical connection should be confirmed with a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor.

What Humidity a Wine Store Actually Has to Hold

Wine Guardian considers 50 to 70 percent relative humidity adequate, with 60 percent ideal. Under that range corks dry and wine oxidizes; over it labels and mold become the problem.

See where a Wine Guardian humidifier sits relative to the cooling system before you decide whether your space needs one at all.

Do You Need One

Before the 99H0173-30: Does Your Wine Storage Actually Run Dry?

Often it does not. Wine Guardian considers relative humidity between 50 and 70 percent adequate with 60 percent ideal, and below-grade rooms, rooms with exposed masonry and rooms in humid regions frequently hold that band with no help at all. A room already inside it gains nothing from a humidifier except a water line, a drain line and a recurring pad change. The readings that decide it are set out in a guide to when wine storage needs a humidifier and when it does not.

What the cooling system can and cannot do sets the test. Wine Guardian states that a cooling unit alone cannot add moisture or humidity to cellar air, so a D050 through D200 that reports relative humidity is describing the room, not changing it. Log the space through the driest, coldest weeks of the year and add a humidifier only if the low readings fall under 50 percent. Dry winter air, a tightly sealed vapour barrier, a fully finished room with no exposed masonry and an arid region are what usually push a room under the range.

Capacity is decided on the cooling side: Wine Guardian publishes no cellar-volume rating for its humidifiers. The twelve systems this humidifier mounts to are all Wine Guardian Sentinel Series systems, divided between the ducted configuration and the ducted split configuration. Eight of them, the D050, D088 and the matching DP, DS and SP models, sit in the band of cooling units for cellars of 2,200 to 4,500 cubic feet; the D200, DP200, DS200 and SP200 sit above it. A licensed HVAC professional should confirm the pairing for your space.

Fit Check

Is the 99H0173-30 the Right Humidifier for Commercial Wine Cellar Use?

✓ Ideal For

  • Spaces served by a Sentinel Series D050, D088, D200 or a matching DP, DS or SP system
  • Commercial wine cellars, wine bars and storage rooms where equipment must stay out of the wine space
  • Installations where the cooling system already sits in an adjacent room with service access
  • Targets at or below 60 percent RH, which is the maximum Wine Guardian suggests for an integrated humidifier
  • Sites with no spare electrical supply at the equipment, since the humidifier draws 24 Volt from the system

× Not the Right Fit

  • A room that already measures inside 50 to 70 percent relative humidity through the driest weeks of the year
  • Legacy versions of the same model numbers, which Wine Guardian asks buyers to raise with Wine Guardian directly
  • The smaller Sentinel Series systems, the D025, DP25, DS025 and SP25, which take the 99H0173-20 instead
  • Through-the-wall and ductless split installations, where a freestanding humidifier is the published route
  • The TTW Classic line, which Wine Guardian states is not compatible with humidifiers
  • Targets above 60 percent RH, where Wine Guardian recommends a freestanding humidifier inside the wine space
  • 50 Hz installations, for which Wine Guardian publishes a separate integrated humidifier
Key Features

Why This Integrated Humidifier for Wine Storage Adds Moisture at the Cooling System

Feature What it means for your cellar
Attaches to either side Wine Guardian states these humidifier units attach directly to either side of its ducted or ducted split cooling systems, so the installer can use whichever side the equipment room allows.
Quarter-turn fasteners Wine Guardian describes quarter-turn fasteners that let the humidifier be removed from or attached to a Sentinel Series system in two clicks, which is what makes drip-pad service practical on equipment in an adjacent room.
24 Volt from the system Wine Guardian states the humidifier is powered directly from a Wine Guardian ducted or ducted split system with no separate power source required.
Moisture into the airstream Wine Guardian describes integrated humidifiers as adding moisture to the air at the cooling system rather than directly in the wine space, which keeps water connections and hardware out of the room.
Evaporative drip pad Water saturates a drip pad and clean moisture evaporates into the airstream. The cover is removable and the pad is cleanable in the field.
Insulated against sweating Wine Guardian describes an insulated design built from commercial-grade, lightweight materials to help prevent sweating even in humid environments.
Controlled from the wine space Wine Guardian's humidifier datasheet lists a cellar-mounted remote interface controller as the control for its humidifiers, so the setpoint is read where the bottles are rather than at the equipment.
How It Works

One Humidifier Body, Twelve Systems It Can Mount To

The humidifier housing carries a wetted evaporative pad and hangs on the side of the cooling system, and the system's own airflow picks the moisture up and carries it to the space in the supply air. Wine Guardian publishes the same 0.42 to 1.0 lb/hr rating, the same 24 Volt supply and the same 20 x 16 x 14 in envelope for this model and for the 99H0173-20; what separates them is the set of cooling systems each is published for.

The gain from mounting at the equipment is that nothing is visible in the wine space and no water line runs into it. The cost is a ceiling on what the room can reach: Wine Guardian gives the integrated humidifiers a suggested maximum of 60 percent RH, and recommends a freestanding humidifier installed inside the wine space to go above it. Which band to target, and what equipment reaches each one, is covered in a guide to humidity ranges, equipment and running costs.

The constraints land at the equipment rather than in the room. The cooling system needs clearance on one side to carry the humidifier, and Wine Guardian requires the mounting location to leave access for the water supply line, the drain line, the power cord and service.

The 0.42 and 1.0 lb/hr figures are printed here in Wine Guardian's own order. Wine Guardian's humidifier datasheet groups them, and the 60°F to 100°F range, under a Supply Water heading, so those temperatures describe the water feeding the humidifier and not the air in the wine space. Wine Guardian publishes no amperage figure and no cellar-volume rating for its humidifiers, so neither is stated here. Confirm final sizing, the water and drain connections and the electrical supply with Wine Guardian's official documentation and a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

99H0173-30 Integrated Humidifier Questions

Will the 99H0173-30 fit the Wine Guardian system I already own?
Only if it is one of the Sentinel Series systems Wine Guardian lists for it: the D050, D088, D200, DP50, DP88, DP200, DS050, DS088, DS200, SP50, SP88 or SP200. Owners of legacy versions of those same model numbers are asked to contact Wine Guardian directly.
What is the difference between the 99H0173-30 and the 99H0173-20?
The cooling systems they mount to. Wine Guardian publishes the 99H0173-20 for the D025, DP25, DS025 and SP25 and this model for the D050 through D200 systems. Both are 24 Volt, both are rated 0.42 to 1.0 lb/hr and both carry the same suggested 60 percent RH maximum.
My cooling system already reports humidity, so why add a humidifier?
Because reading humidity and raising it are different jobs. Wine Guardian states that a cooling unit alone cannot add moisture or humidity to cellar air, so the readout tells you the space is dry without doing anything about it.
Does my wine storage actually need added humidity?
Often it does not. Wine Guardian considers 50 to 70 percent relative humidity adequate with 60 percent ideal, and many below-grade or humid-climate rooms hold that band unaided. Log the space through the driest weeks of the year and buy only if the lows fall under it.
Can the 99H0173-30 hold humidity above 60 percent?
Wine Guardian gives it a suggested maximum of 60 percent relative humidity. To reach a higher target Wine Guardian recommends a Wine Guardian freestanding humidifier, which installs inside a wine space and adds moist air directly.
Does it need a separate power supply?
No. Wine Guardian states the humidifier is powered directly from a Wine Guardian ducted or ducted split system with no separate power source required, and lists 24 Volt as its power requirement. A licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the connection.
How much moisture does the 99H0173-30 add?
Wine Guardian publishes 0.42 lb/hr and 1.0 lb/hr. Its humidifier datasheet groups those figures under Supply Water at a supply water temperature of 60°F to 100°F, so the temperatures describe the water feeding the humidifier rather than the air in the wine space.
What plumbing and maintenance does it need?
A 1/4 in water supply line and a 1/2 in drain line, in a location that leaves access for the water line, the drain line, the power cord and service. Wine Guardian's quick start guide lists a monthly drain check and a yearly clean with the pad replaced if needed.
