Freestanding Humidifier for Wine Room Humidity, Powered by the Cooling Unit

The Wine Guardian freestanding humidifier for use with Wine Guardian units is a freestanding humidifier for wine room humidity that mounts on the wall of the wine space and connects to a Wine Guardian cooling unit by a 2-pin power-control cable. It adds 0.42 to 1.0 lb/hr of moisture, and no plug is required.

A Wine Guardian cooling unit holds temperature and can report relative humidity, but it does not add moisture. Wine Guardian states that a cooling unit alone cannot add moisture or humidity to cellar air. This humidifier is what adds it, and it earns its place only in a wine room that measures below the target range.

Choose this model over the standalone 99H0185-21 when a Wine Guardian cooling unit is already in the room and you would rather run the humidifier from it than from a separate receptacle. As an authorized Wine Guardian dealer we sell it with Wine Guardian's own documentation and warranty; a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm compatibility, plumbing and the electrical connection for your installation.

Why a Wine Room Needs Added Moisture

Wine Guardian considers 50 to 70 percent relative humidity adequate for a wine room, with 60 percent ideal. Under that range corks dry and wine oxidizes; over it labels and mold become the problem. What the cooling unit contributes, and what it does not, is covered in a primer on why humidity matters in a wine room and what Wine Guardian systems hold.

See where a freestanding humidifier sits in the wine space and how it ties back to the cooling unit before you decide whether your room needs one.

Do You Need One

Does a Wine Guardian Cooling Unit Leave Your Wine Room Too Dry?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. Wine Guardian states that a cooling unit alone cannot add moisture or humidity to cellar air, which means a cooling unit cannot raise a dry room; it also does not mean every room served by one becomes dry. Below-grade rooms, rooms with exposed masonry and rooms in humid regions frequently hold 50 to 70 percent relative humidity on their own. The readings that settle the question are set out in a guide to when a wine room needs a humidifier and when it does not.

The honest test is a season of data. Log the room's relative humidity through the driest, coldest weeks of the year, when indoor air is at its driest, and add a humidifier only if the low readings fall under the range Wine Guardian calls adequate. A room that never drops below 50 percent does not need this product, and buying one adds a water line, a drain line and a recurring pad change for nothing.

Wine Guardian publishes no cellar-volume rating for its humidifiers, so room size is decided on the cooling side. Where ductwork is not an option, the Wine Guardian ductless split cooling systems are the configuration most often paired with a freestanding humidifier, since no ductless split accepts an integrated one. Within the cooling units for cellars up to about 1,200 cubic feet, no model accepts an integrated humidifier at all, which makes a freestanding unit the only Wine Guardian humidification route in that band. Confirm the pairing with a licensed HVAC professional.

Fit Check

Is This Humidifier Right for Your Residential or Commercial Wine Room?

✓ Ideal For

  • Wine rooms already served by a Wine Guardian cooling unit
  • Through-the-wall and ductless split installations, which have no integrated humidifier option
  • Rooms with no spare receptacle near the humidifier position, since power comes from the cooling unit
  • Residential and light commercial wine rooms where the humidifier must sit inside the wine space
  • Targets above 60 percent RH, where Wine Guardian points buyers to a freestanding unit inside the room

× Not the Right Fit

  • The TTW Classic line, which Wine Guardian states is not compatible with humidifiers
  • Cellars with no Wine Guardian cooling unit, where the standalone 99H0185-21 is the published model
  • Ducted and ducted split systems where an integrated Sentinel Series humidifier can mount at the unit
  • Rooms that already measure inside 50 to 70 percent RH through the driest weeks of the year
Key Features

Why the Wine Guardian Freestanding Humidifier Works With Your Cooling Unit

Feature What it means for your cellar
2-pin connection, no plug Wine Guardian states it connects directly to any Wine Guardian wine cellar cooling unit through a 2-pin connection for power, with no plug required. That removes the need for a receptacle at the mounting position.
Power-control cable included The cable ships in the box, so power and control travel on the same connection back to the cooling unit.
Mounts inside the wine space Moisture is released where the bottles are, rather than at a cooling system upstream, which is the reason Wine Guardian points to a freestanding unit above 60 percent RH.
Evaporative drip pad Water saturates a drip pad and evaporates into the room. The cover is removable and the pad is cleanable in the field.
Water supply on top Wine Guardian locates the water supply connection on top of the unit and the drain at the bottom, which constrains where it can practically be mounted.
Insulated against sweating Wine Guardian describes increased insulation on the redesigned humidifier to prevent sweating in humid environments.
50 Hz and 60 Hz Wine Guardian lists both line frequencies for this model, unlike the 60 Hz only standalone version.
How It Works

Moisture Released in the Room, Power Drawn From the Unit

A fan draws wine room air across a wetted evaporative pad and returns it carrying moisture, so humidity is added as vapour inside the wine space itself. The cooling unit supplies power and control through the 2-pin cable; it does not supply the moisture.

Placing the humidifier in the room rather than at the cooling system is what lets a target above 60 percent relative humidity be considered. Wine Guardian gives its integrated humidifiers a suggested maximum of 60 percent RH and points buyers to a freestanding unit inside the cellar above that.

The costs of that placement are visible equipment on the wall or in the racking, a water supply line, a drain line, and a drip pad that has to be checked and eventually replaced. Wine Guardian requires the mounting location to leave access for all of those plus service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Freestanding Humidifier Questions for Wine Guardian Owners

What plumbing does this humidifier need?
A water supply line and a drain. Wine Guardian's quick start guide calls for a 1/4 in water supply line and a 1/2 in drain line at the bottom of the humidifier, and requires the location to leave access for the water line, the drain line, the power cord and service.
How often does the drip pad need changing?
Wine Guardian recommends checking the humidifier monthly for mineral build-up on the drip pad, which can reduce airflow, and yearly cleaning the humidifier and replacing the pad if needed. Hard water shortens that interval.
My Wine Guardian unit already shows humidity, so why add a humidifier?
Because reading humidity and raising it are different jobs. Wine Guardian states that a cooling unit alone cannot add moisture or humidity to cellar air, so the display tells you the room is dry without doing anything about it.
Does my wine room actually need added humidity?
Often it does not. Wine Guardian considers 50 to 70 percent relative humidity adequate with 60 percent ideal, and many rooms hold that unaided. Log the room through the driest weeks of the year and buy only if the lows fall under the range.
Does this model need its own electrical outlet?
No. Wine Guardian states it connects directly to any Wine Guardian wine cellar cooling unit through a 2-pin connection for power, with no plug required. A licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the connection.
Which Wine Guardian cooling units does it work with?
Wine Guardian cooling units generally, with one published exception: the TTW Classic line is not compatible with humidifiers. Integrated Sentinel Series humidifiers, by contrast, mount only to ducted and ducted split systems.
How much moisture does this humidifier add?
Wine Guardian publishes 0.42 lb/hr at 60°F and 1.0 lb/hr at 100°F. Its humidifier datasheet lists those capacities under supply water, at a supply water temperature of 60°F to 100°F.
Should I choose this or an integrated humidifier?
Choose freestanding when the humidifier has to sit inside the wine space, or when the target is above 60 percent RH, which is where Wine Guardian points buyers. Choose integrated when the system is ducted or ducted split and Wine Guardian's suggested 60 percent RH maximum is enough.
