SENTINEL SERIES · Water-Cooled Ducted

D050WC Water-Cooled Ducted Cooling Unit for Cellars of 650 to 3000 Cubic Feet

The Wine Guardian D050WC water-cooled ducted unit is a self-contained wine cellar cooling system that Wine Guardian rates at up to 6,320 BTU/h, rated at 80°F ambient, and that rejects its heat into a building water loop instead of into the surrounding air.

That single difference is the whole decision. A water-cooled unit exists for the case where there is nowhere acceptable to send warm exhaust air: a sealed mechanical room, a finished basement with no route to outside, a space where the heat would land somewhere it is not wanted, or a build where the noise and airflow of a condenser fan cannot go. Wine Guardian states that warm condenser air connections are not required on the D050WC, which is what makes the water-cooled option a solution where warm condenser air venting is not possible. In exchange the heat has to go somewhere else, and that somewhere is a water loop the building already has. Specifying the D050WC is therefore a plumbing and building-services decision before it is a cooling decision.

Wine Guardian publishes the water side of the 050 class in numbers. The Water-cooled Condenser Section block of the ducted specifications sheet gives each D model its own column, and the D050 column reads 0.60 GPM, a 0.40 PSI water-side pressure drop and a 0.50 inch outside-diameter connection. That means the loop can be checked against real numbers before anything is ordered. Alongside those figures Wine Guardian publishes a safe condenser inlet water temperature range of 45°F to 85°F, warns that water entering above 85°F risks tripping the high-pressure switch, requires a year-round water source, names geothermal, cooling tower and lake water as the applications these systems are built for, and does not recommend a water-cooled system on a city water supply.

The D050WC is a single-voltage unit: Wine Guardian publishes one supply for it, 115 V single phase at 60 Hz, with no 208 V or 230 V alternative to choose between. It is sized for wine cellars and wine rooms of 650 to 3000 cubic feet and holds them at 55°F to 58°F. Every unit ships with a factory-configured water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve, a coated evaporator coil, a Wireless2Base remote interface controller, an aluminum chassis with UL-rated composite panels and Wine Guardian fail-safe protection. As an authorized Wine Guardian dealer we list the D050WC with full manufacturer specifications so it can be compared and sized correctly; final sizing should be confirmed with the Wine Guardian cooling calculator and a licensed HVAC professional.

Where the 050 Class Sends Its Heat

See how a Wine Guardian water-cooled system carries cellar heat out through a water loop instead of blowing it into an adjacent room.

  • Heat rejected to water, so no warm condenser air connection is required
  • Suits sealed mechanical rooms and spaces with no path to outside air
  • Needs a year-round loop able to deliver 0.60 GPM at the unit

Fit Check

Is the D050WC the Right Wine Guardian Water Cooled System for Your Cellar?

The D050WC is the right unit when a cellar of 650 to 3000 cubic feet has no acceptable place to reject heat into the air and the building already has a year-round water loop able to take it. If that loop does not exist yet, the honest comparison is not against another cooling unit but against the cost of building one, and in most homes the air-cooled D050 is the simpler answer for the same 6,320 BTU/h at an 80°F condenser inlet. Our breakdown of what wine cellar cooling equipment, installation and running costs actually come to sets out the figures that comparison rests on. What makes the 050 class straightforward to specify is that its loop duty is published: 0.60 GPM at 0.40 PSI through a 0.50 inch connection, so a mechanical engineer can size the branch before the order is placed.

✓ Ideal For

  • Sites with an existing geothermal loop, cooling tower or lake water source, the applications Wine Guardian names for its water-cooled systems
  • Wine cellars and wine rooms of 650 to 3000 cubic feet, residential or light commercial
  • Sealed mechanical rooms, interior spaces and finished basements with no route for warm condenser air
  • Projects where the loop duty has to be documented before purchase, since Wine Guardian publishes the 050 flow, pressure drop and connection size
  • Builds where the noise and airflow of a condenser fan would be unacceptable in the space available
  • Projects where a licensed contractor is already making refrigeration, electrical and plumbing connections
  • Installs that can route insulated ductwork to a unit located outside the cellar

✕ Consider Another Model If

  • There is no water loop on site, in which case the air-cooled D050 does the same cooling with no plumbing trade
  • Your only water source is a metered city supply, which Wine Guardian does not recommend for water-cooled systems
  • The available water is seasonal, shared with another load, or cannot be held between 45°F and 85°F all year
  • The loop cannot spare 0.60 GPM at the unit alongside whatever else it already serves
  • Your cellar is under about 650 cubic feet, where the D025WC is the smaller water-cooled unit
  • Your cellar is larger than 3000 cubic feet, where the D088WC is the water-cooled step up
  • You need a 208 V or 230 V supply, since the D050WC is published at 115 V only
Key Features

D050WC Key Features

The D050WC pairs the standard Sentinel Series ducted platform with a factory-configured water-cooled condenser section, so everything below the heat-rejection rows is shared with the air-cooled D050.

Feature What it means for your cellar
Water-cooled condenser section Heat leaves through a water loop rather than a condenser air stream, so no room has to absorb or exhaust it. The loop must already exist and must run all year.
Factory-configured water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve Wine Guardian builds the water side into the unit rather than leaving it to be assembled on site, and the regulating valve meters loop flow to the load instead of running wide open.
Copper straight tube water connections, 0.50 in outside diameter Cooling water inlet and outlet are copper straight tube on the side of the cabinet, so the connection is made by the plumbing or mechanical trade during installation.
Control board tie-in points for geothermal pumps The main control board carries tie-in points to control geothermal pumps, so the loop pump can follow the cooling call instead of running independently.
Self-contained ducted design Evaporator, fans, compressor, condenser and controls sit in one cabinet outside the cellar, so the wine room itself stays quiet and clear.
Coated evaporator coil Protects the evaporator side against corrosion in the humid air a wine cellar is deliberately kept in.
Wireless2Base remote interface controller Monitors temperature and humidity continuously and corrects conditions before the wine is affected; the controller can be placed in a kitchen, den or elsewhere.
Precision control (±1°F / ±10% RH) Holds wine-storage conditions of 55°F to 58°F, with an optional humidifier for 55% to 65% relative humidity.
Aluminum chassis with UL-rated composite panels Resists dents and scratches through shipping and installation, and keeps the cabinet serviceable in a mechanical room.
Field-serviceable, multi-panel access Panels, duct collars and grille remove with a couple of screwdriver turns, so service happens on site rather than by returning the unit.
Optional bundles and humidification Wine Guardian lists an All Wine Temperatures Bundle plus integrated and freestanding humidifiers, so heating, serving-temperature control and humidity can be added as the space requires.

What the D050WC Needs From the Water Loop

Wine Guardian publishes the water side of the D050WC in numbers. The ducted specifications sheet carries a block headed Water-cooled Condenser Section (option) with one column per D model, and the D050 column reads 0.60 GPM, a 0.40 PSI pressure drop and a 0.50 inch outside-diameter connection. The ducted installation and operation manual adds that water-cooled units have copper straight tube connections for both the cooling water inlet and the outlet, and Wine Guardian places those connections on the side of the cabinet for access. Alongside those figures sit three hard requirements: a condenser inlet water temperature inside a safe operating range of 45°F to 85°F, a year-round water source, and a recirculating or natural supply rather than a metered municipal one. Wine Guardian warns that water entering above 85°F risks tripping the high-pressure switch, and notes separately that because consumption follows the cooling cycle, the amount of water per day can be sizable, which is why geothermal, cooling tower and lake or pool systems are the applications it names. Have the installing contractor confirm the loop can actually deliver 0.60 GPM at the unit alongside everything else it serves.

Built-in protection: the system checks conditions continuously through remote air sensing and adjusts before temperature or humidity drift can affect the collection.

How Quiet Is It

How Quiet Is the D050WC Water-Cooled Unit?

Why Rejecting Heat to Water Removes a Noise Source

Wine Guardian publishes no decibel rating for any of its ducted units, so no measured figure can be quoted for the D050WC, and the dominant noise factor is placement rather than a number: the unit installs outside the wine room and connects through insulated ductwork, so the compressor and fans are not in the space you occupy. Rejecting heat to water also removes the condenser air stream that a comparable air-cooled unit has to move and exhaust somewhere, and Wine Guardian names objectionable condenser fan noise as one of the reasons to choose a water-cooled system.

  • The unit sits in a utility room, closet or adjacent space, away from the cellar.
  • Internal components are mounted on rubber-in-shear isolators to reduce vibration and noise.
  • Flexible ductwork absorbs air noise, and sound drops further each time a duct run turns a corner.
  • There is no condenser exhaust airflow to find a home for, which is often the noise complaint on an air-cooled install.

Wine Guardian D050WC Water-Cooled Ducted Specifications

Wine Guardian publishes the D050 platform in a single voltage column, 115 V single phase at 60 Hz, so unlike the D088 and D200 classes there is no second voltage to choose between and every capacity and current figure below belongs to that one supply. The capacity ladder is published on the Wine Guardian ducted specifications sheet against condenser inlet air temperature, in the manufacturer's own wording, and each row is given as total and sensible capacity. Note that the ladder is measured against air at the condenser, not against entering water; Wine Guardian publishes no separate capacity table against water temperature for this line, and the water side appears instead in the sheet's Water-cooled Condenser Section (option) block. No 100°F row is printed on the sheet, so none is shown here.

Minimum circuit ampacity, maximum overcurrent protection and the electric heat rating are printed on the Wine Guardian ducted specifications sheet as combined heat and no-heat values inside single cells and are not reproduced here. Take them from that sheet and have a licensed electrician size the circuit, the disconnect and the overcurrent protection. Condenser fan wattage is not shown either: the D050WC rejects its heat to the water loop, not to a condenser air stream.

How the D050WC Compares With the Air-Cooled Wine Guardian D050

The D050WC and the air-cooled D050 are the same cooling platform at the same published capacity; they differ only in where the heat goes and what the building must already provide. The D025WC and the D088WC are the water-cooled sizes either side of it.

Read the water row carefully, because it is the row that decides the project. Wine Guardian's Water-cooled Condenser Section block gives the flow, pressure drop and connection size for every D model, so the loop duty of each class can be documented from the manufacturer's own sheet before the order is placed. Every capacity figure in the table is the manufacturer's 80°F condenser inlet air row, quoted at the voltage that column is published in.

Best for: choose the D050WC if a cellar of 650 to 3000 cubic feet has nowhere acceptable to reject heat into the air, a year-round loop is already on site, and the loop duty needs to be proven on paper before purchase. Not ideal for: choose the air-cooled D050 if a ventilated space is available, because it delivers the same 6,320 BTU/h at an 80°F condenser inlet with no water connection and one fewer trade; choose the D025WC if the room is smaller than the 050 class covers, and the D088WC if it is larger.

If you are still choosing a configuration, the full range of Wine Guardian water-cooled ducted systems shows every capacity that rejects heat to a loop, and if you are working from room size instead, compare the D050WC against the other cooling units for cellars of 2,200 to 4,500 cubic feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

D050WC Water Loop and Cooling Questions

How much water will the D050WC actually use over a day?
Wine Guardian publishes the D050 water side as 0.60 GPM while the compressor is running, so daily consumption depends entirely on how often the unit cycles. Wine Guardian itself warns that water consumption varies by unit size and capacity and that, considering the frequency of the cooling cycle, the amount of water per day can be sizable, which is why it treats recirculating sources such as geothermal loops, cooling towers and lake or pool water as the ideal applications. Have the installing contractor confirm the loop can carry 0.60 GPM at the unit alongside everything else it already serves.
Will a cooling tower, geothermal loop or lake source work for the D050WC, and will city water?
A cooling tower, a geothermal loop or a lake source is exactly what Wine Guardian builds these systems for, and city water is not. Wine Guardian names geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications for its water-cooled systems, and its ducted installation and operation manual states plainly that it does not recommend using a water-cooled system if you are using a city water supply. Plan the D050WC around a recirculating or natural source rather than a metered municipal line.
What happens to the D050WC if the loop water rises above 85°F or the supply stops?
Warm or missing water stops the cooling before the cellar warms up. Wine Guardian gives the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature as 45°F to 85°F and warns that if the water temperature entering the unit is above 85°F you risk tripping the high-pressure switch, and it requires a year-round water supply, so a loop that is seasonal, shared with another load or throttled will not hold the room. A licensed HVAC professional should confirm the loop can keep entering water inside 45°F to 85°F in every season before the unit is specified.
Does the D050WC still need somewhere to send warm condenser air?
No. Wine Guardian states that warm condenser air connections are not required on the D050WC, which is what makes the water-cooled option a solution where warm condenser air venting is not possible. The heat still has to go somewhere, but it leaves through the water loop rather than through a duct or a louvre, so the mechanical space does not have to absorb or exhaust it.
Is the D050WC quieter than the air-cooled D050?
Wine Guardian publishes no decibel rating for any of its ducted units, so no measured comparison can be quoted. What can be said is structural: Wine Guardian names condenser fan noise as one of the reasons to choose water-cooled, and the D050WC has no condenser air stream to move or exhaust, while both units install outside the wine room and connect through insulated ductwork.
What pipe size and connection does the D050WC water side need?
The Water-cooled Condenser Section block of the Wine Guardian ducted specifications sheet gives the D050 column a 0.50 inch outside-diameter connection, a 0.60 GPM flow rate and a 0.40 PSI water-side pressure drop. The ducted installation and operation manual adds that water-cooled units have copper straight tube connections for both the cooling water inlet and the outlet, and Wine Guardian places those connections on the side of the unit for access.
How much cooling does the D050WC deliver, and under what measured condition?
Wine Guardian rates the D050WC at up to 6,320 BTU/h, and states that cooling capacity is rated at 80°F ambient. On the ducted specifications sheet the D050 column gives 6,320 BTU/h total and 4,510 BTU/h sensible at an 80°F condenser inlet air temperature, published as net cooling capacity at entering temperature and humidity conditions of 57°F and 55% RH at rated airflow. Wine Guardian recommends the unit for cellars of 650 to 3000 cubic feet; final sizing should be confirmed with the Wine Guardian cooling calculator and a licensed HVAC professional.
What electrical supply and circuit does the D050WC need?
The D050WC is a single-voltage unit. Wine Guardian publishes one supply for it, 115 V single phase at 60 Hz, with no 208 V or 230 V alternative, and gives the running current draw in cooling as 11.3 A. Minimum circuit ampacity, overcurrent protection and the electric heat rating are printed on the Wine Guardian ducted specifications sheet as combined heat and no-heat values in single cells and are not reproduced here; take them from that sheet and have a licensed electrician size the circuit, the disconnect and the overcurrent protection.
Who is qualified to install the D050WC, and what trades are involved?
Wine Guardian lists the installation level for the D050WC as licensed contractor. Because the unit is ducted, electrically connected and plumbed into a water loop with copper straight tube connections, the job normally involves the refrigeration, electrical and plumbing trades working together. Wine Guardian documentation and a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the final installation design.
What warranty does Wine Guardian provide on the D050WC?
Wine Guardian provides a standard warranty of 25 months on parts and 13 months on labor. A Platinum option extends coverage to 25 months on parts and labor plus a 36-month parts-only extension on the compressor, evaporator coil and condenser coil, 61 months in total. Warranty service and product registration run through Wine Guardian.
