PRO SERIES · Water-Cooled Ducted Unit

Wine Guardian DP50WC Water-Cooled Ducted Unit for Cellars up to 3,000 Cubic Feet

The Wine Guardian DP50WC water-cooled ducted wine cellar cooling unit is a self-contained system rated at 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h on a single 115 V supply, which Wine Guardian recommends for spaces of 650 to 3,000 cubic feet and rates at 80°F ambient.

It is the water-cooled configuration of the Pro ducted DP50: the same 41.5 in cabinet, fitted at the factory with an integral water-cooled condensing coil and a water-regulating valve, so the cellar heat leaves through a water loop instead of into the space the cabinet sits in. Wine Guardian builds these systems for geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications and states that they require a year-round source of water. Capacity is not the reason to choose it: Wine Guardian rates the DP50 and the DP50WC identically. Heat rejection is.

Wine Guardian places the DP50WC in its Pro ducted line, which its Pro Ducted brochure describes as ideal for low-temperature air conditioning at 52°F to 70°F rather than for wine storage alone. As an authorized Wine Guardian dealer we publish the manufacturer’s own data for this model and say plainly which rows Wine Guardian does not publish against the DP50WC code, so the specification can be checked before a quote is requested. This guidance is general and intended to help narrow the selection. Final sizing, water supply, drain, electrical requirements and configuration should be confirmed with Wine Guardian’s official documentation and a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor. The specification mistakes contractors most often make on wine cellar projects are worth working through before that conversation.

The Water Side

The Water Loop the DP50WC Runs On

The DP50WC needs a year-round loop delivering water to the condenser between 45°F and 85°F. Wine Guardian gives that as the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature in its Pro ducted installation and operation manual, and warns that if the water temperature entering the unit is above 85°F you risk tripping the high-pressure switch.

45°F to 85°F entering water

Wine Guardian builds these systems for geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications, states that they require a year-round source of water, and does not recommend a water-cooled system on a city water supply.

What the Building Has to Provide

  • A recirculating or natural source. Wine Guardian’s DP50WC page names geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications. Its Pro ducted manual states that it does not recommend using a water-cooled system if you are using a city water supply, so a metered municipal line is the wrong starting point for this unit.
  • Water inside 45°F to 85°F, in every season. A loop that is seasonal, throttled, or already shared with another load is the failure mode to design out before the unit is specified. Above 85°F entering water, Wine Guardian warns you risk tripping the high-pressure switch.
  • Copper straight tube connections. Wine Guardian states that water-cooled units have copper straight tube connections for both the cooling water inlet and the outlet, so the plumbing trade needs to be on the job, not designed around.
  • A water-regulating valve the unit already owns. Wine Guardian supplies the DP50WC with a factory-configured integral water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve, so the loop is modulated inside the machine rather than by a valve the installer has to add and balance. Its manual covers flushing that valve for sediment as routine maintenance.
  • A flow rate the contractor confirms. Wine Guardian publishes no flow rate, water-side pressure drop or connection size against the DP50WC model code. Take those three figures from Wine Guardian directly and have the installing contractor confirm the loop can carry them alongside whatever else it serves.

On the numbers this page does not print: Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted specifications sheet does carry a water-cooled condenser section, but that block prints its figures with no model headings above its columns, the string DP50WC appears nowhere in the document, and its header reads Model Number DP25 DP50. Its pressure-drop row prints the same value in both columns and so does its pipe connection row. Rather than attribute a neighbouring column’s number to this unit, the flow rate, pressure drop and connection size are routed to Wine Guardian and to the installing contractor.

Fit Check

Is the DP50WC Right for Your Cellar and Its Water Supply?

The DP50WC fits a wine cellar or conditioned room of 650 to 3,000 cubic feet in a building that already runs a year-round water loop, and where the mechanical space has no practical way to absorb or exhaust condenser heat. What the room asks of the unit is set by its envelope, and the R-values and insulation materials a cellar wall carries change the load before any model is chosen.

✓ Ideal For

  • Wine rooms and conditioned spaces of roughly 650 to 3,000 cubic feet
  • Buildings with a geothermal loop, a cooling tower or a lake source already in place and running year-round
  • Mechanical rooms, closets and basements with no practical route for discharging warm condenser air
  • Installations where the cabinet can sit outside the room and connect through 10 in ductwork
  • Projects that want the Pro ducted tier, which Wine Guardian describes as ideal for low-temperature air conditioning at 52°F to 70°F rather than for wine storage alone
  • Specialty applications beyond wine, which Wine Guardian names for this unit alongside wine storage

✕ Consider Another Model If

  • The only water available is a metered city supply, which Wine Guardian does not recommend for a water-cooled system
  • Entering water cannot be held between 45°F and 85°F through every season
  • There is a ventilated space that can absorb and exhaust condenser heat, in which case the air-cooled DP50 is the simpler path with no plumbing and no loop
  • The room is well under about 650 cubic feet, where the DP25WC is the smaller water-cooled step
  • The room runs past about 3,000 cubic feet, where the DP88WC is the next water-cooled step
  • You are buying on capacity alone, since Wine Guardian rates the DP50 and the DP50WC identically
Key Features

DP50WC Pro Ducted Key Features

The DP50WC pairs the Pro ducted cabinet with a factory-configured integral water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve, copper straight tube water connections, low ambient protection as standard and enhanced refrigeration controls.

Feature What it means for your cellar
Factory-configured water-cooled condensing coil The DP50WC rejects the cellar’s heat into a water loop instead of into the surrounding air, so the mechanical space never has to absorb or exhaust that heat. Wine Guardian configures the coil at the factory rather than leaving it to the installer.
Integral water-regulating valve Wine Guardian fits the water-regulating valve inside the unit, so the loop is modulated by the machine. Its Pro ducted manual covers flushing the valve to clear sediment as routine maintenance.
Accepts entering water from 45°F to 85°F Wine Guardian gives 45°F to 85°F as the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature, which is wide enough for a geothermal loop, a cooling tower or a lake source across the seasons.
No warm condenser air connections required Wine Guardian’s DP50WC page states that warm condenser air connections are not required, which makes the water-cooled option a solution where warm condenser air venting is not possible, so there is no condenser duct run, no louvre and no adjacent space that has to take the heat.
Copper straight tube water connections Wine Guardian states that water-cooled units have copper straight tube connections for both the cooling water inlet and the outlet, which keeps the plumbing reachable for service after the unit is set.
Tie-in points for geothermal pumps Wine Guardian’s water-cooled ducted line page lists a main control board with tie-in points to control geothermal pumps, so the loop pump can start and stop with the cooling call instead of running continuously.
Self-contained, fully ductable cabinet Evaporator, fans, compressor, condenser and controls sit in one cabinet outside the cellar and connect through ductwork, so the wine room stays quiet and every inch of it stays available for storage.
Low ambient protection as standard Wine Guardian lists low ambient protection among the DP50WC’s standard features, so the unit is built to keep operating when the space around the cabinet runs cold rather than only when it runs warm.
Enhanced refrigeration controls and smart-thermostat compatibility Wine Guardian states that the DP50WC carries enhanced refrigeration controls and is compatible with modern smart thermostats, and that the Pro platform runs on 24-volt electronics for smart-home integration.
Pro ducted tier Wine Guardian places the DP50WC in its Pro ducted line, whose brochure describes the systems as ideal for low-temperature air conditioning at 52°F to 70°F rather than for wine storage alone.
Optional humidification The unit controls temperature. An optional Wine Guardian humidifier, integrated or freestanding, is what raises a cellar to 55% to 65% relative humidity.
Electric heat option Wine Guardian’s DP50WC page states that the heater option protects wine cellars from dangerously low temperatures, with adjustable activation from 2°F to 6°F below your setpoint. It is ordered as a separate factory configuration of the same unit.
Additional condensing-section duct collars Wine Guardian notes that additional duct collar connections are located on the condensing section of this cooling unit, which gives the installer more than one route out of the cabinet.
Field serviceable Wine Guardian describes the unit as completely serviceable in the field, so service happens on site rather than by returning the unit to the factory.

Built-in protection: a high-pressure switch stops the unit rather than letting it run on water that has gone too warm, which is why Wine Guardian sets 85°F as the top of the entering-water range.

How Quiet Is It

How Quiet Is the DP50WC?

Wine Guardian publishes no decibel rating for any of its ducted units, so the honest answer for the DP50WC is structural rather than a number. Two things work in its favour: the cabinet installs outside the wine room and connects through insulated ductwork, and because the condenser is water-cooled there is no condenser air stream to move or exhaust at all.

Why the Water-Cooled Configuration Is the Quiet One

  • The cabinet sits in a utility room, closet or adjacent space, away from the cellar.
  • Heat leaves through a water loop, so there is no condenser fan discharge to place, duct or silence.
  • Flexible ductwork absorbs air noise, and sound drops further at every turn in a duct run.
  • Any dealer or comparison chart quoting a decibel figure for a Wine Guardian ducted unit is not quoting the manufacturer.

On the suppressed rows: Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted specifications sheet is headed Model Number DP25 DP50 and carries no DP50WC column. Its evaporator and condenser fan motor rows print identical figures, its minimum-circuit row is printed in a combined heat / no heat cell whose pair inverts, and its water-cooled condenser block has no model headings at all. Rather than attribute a neighbouring column’s number to this unit, those rows route you to Wine Guardian and to a licensed electrician.

On the capacity table: the performance ladder printed on the Pro ducted specifications sheet is measured against condenser inlet air temperature and belongs to the air-cooled DP50. A water-cooled condenser has no inlet air, so that ladder is not reproduced on this page. The headline capacity keeps the condition Wine Guardian does publish, 80°F ambient, which is an ambient condition and not an entering-water temperature.

On the warranty: Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted installation manual describes a two-year term, while its current standard and Platinum warranty documents give 25 months parts and 13 months labor, and the Platinum option gives 25 months parts and labor plus a 36-month parts-only extension on the compressor, evaporator coil and condenser coil. The warranty documents are the governing instruments and are what is published above.

Compare Across the Line

How the DP50WC Compares With the Air-Cooled DP50 and the DP25WC

The DP50WC and the air-cooled DP50 are the same Pro ducted cabinet at the same rated capacity; the only question that separates them is where the heat is allowed to go. The DP25WC is the smaller water-cooled step for rooms below this one, and both sit inside the wider Wine Guardian ducted wine cellar cooling range.

Decision factor DP50WC (this unit) DP50 air-cooled DP25WC water-cooled

Unit weight and cabinet length 125 lbs, 41.5 in 125 lbs, 41.5 in 80 lbs, 33.45 in

Best for / not ideal for: choose the DP50WC when the room is roughly 650 to 3,000 cubic feet and the building already runs a year-round loop holding entering water between 45°F and 85°F, or when there is simply nowhere to send warm condenser air; choose the air-cooled DP50 when a ventilated space can absorb that heat, since Wine Guardian rates it at the same 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h and it needs no plumbing and no loop; choose the DP25WC when the room is comfortably under about 2,000 cubic feet. The DP50WC is not ideal where the only water is a metered city supply, which Wine Guardian does not recommend for a water-cooled system, where the loop cannot hold 45°F to 85°F through the whole year, or where the buyer is looking for extra capacity, since the water-cooled configuration changes heat rejection rather than output.

Other Pro Ducted and Water-Cooled Models

If you are still narrowing the configuration, the full range of Wine Guardian cooling units that reject their heat to a water loop sets the DP50WC against every other water-cooled model, and the cooling units for cellars of 2,200 to 4,500 cubic feet gather every configuration that suits a room at the upper end of this unit’s range.

Frequently Asked Questions

DP50WC Water-Cooled Questions

Why does Wine Guardian show the DP50WC at 6,570 BTU/h in one place and 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h in another?
Use 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h. That is the figure in the Additional Information table on Wine Guardian's own DP50WC page, and it is repeated on Wine Guardian's water-cooled ducted line page and on its Pro Series page. The 6,570 BTU/h number sits in the description paragraph of the same page, in a sentence that names the DP50 rather than the DP50WC, and it matches the air-cooled DP50's published output at a 70°F condenser inlet air temperature. Several retail listings have copied that sentence forward. Final sizing should be confirmed with Wine Guardian and a licensed HVAC professional.
If Wine Guardian rates the DP50 and the DP50WC the same, what does the water-cooled version actually change?
It changes where the heat goes, not how much cooling you get. Wine Guardian lists both units at 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h on 115/1/60 and at the same 41.5 by 22.5 by 19 inch cabinet and 125 lb weight. The DP50WC is that cabinet with a factory-configured integral water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve, so the heat leaves through a water loop instead of into the room the cabinet sits in. Specify it when the mechanical space cannot absorb or exhaust condenser heat, not to gain capacity.
Who has to be on site to install the DP50WC?
Plan on the refrigeration, electrical and plumbing trades. Wine Guardian's own Pro ducted installation and operation manual states that installation and maintenance of this equipment is to be performed only by qualified personnel who are familiar with local codes and regulations and are experienced with this type of equipment. The DP50WC is ducted, electrically connected and plumbed into a water loop through copper straight tube connections, so a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the final installation design.
Can the DP50WC run on city water?
Wine Guardian does not recommend it. Its Pro ducted installation and operation manual states that it does not recommend using a water-cooled system if you are using a city water supply, and Wine Guardian's own DP50WC page names geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications as what these systems are built for. Plan the DP50WC around a recirculating or natural year-round source rather than a metered municipal line.
What happens to the DP50WC if the loop water goes above 85°F or the supply stops?
Warm or missing water stops the cooling before the cellar warms up. Wine Guardian gives the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature as 45°F to 85°F and warns that if the water temperature entering the unit is above 85°F you risk tripping the high-pressure switch, which then needs attention before the unit runs again. A licensed HVAC professional should confirm the loop can hold entering water inside that range in every season before the DP50WC is specified.
What water flow rate, pressure drop and pipe size does the DP50WC need?
This page does not publish them, and the reason is worth knowing. Wine Guardian's Pro ducted specifications sheet carries a water-cooled condenser section, but that block prints its figures without model headings over its columns, its pressure drop row prints the same value twice and its pipe connection row prints the same value twice, and the code DP50WC appears nowhere in the document, whose header reads Model Number DP25 DP50. No figure in that block can be attributed to this unit with confidence. Take the flow rate, pressure drop and connection size from Wine Guardian directly and have the installing contractor confirm the loop can deliver them.
What size wine cellar does the DP50WC cool, and under what condition is it rated?
Wine Guardian recommends the DP50WC for spaces of 650 to 3,000 cubic feet and rates it at 2,700 to 6,320 BTU/h. Wine Guardian's Pro Series page and its water-cooled ducted page both state that cooling capacity is rated at 80°F ambient. Note that this is an ambient condition rather than an entering-water temperature, so it is not the same thing as the 45°F to 85°F loop requirement. This guidance is general and intended to help narrow the selection; final sizing should be confirmed with Wine Guardian's cooling calculator and a licensed HVAC professional.
What warranty covers the DP50WC?
Wine Guardian's standard warranty runs 25 months on parts and 13 months on labor. The optional Platinum warranty runs 25 months on parts and labor plus a 36-month parts-only extension on the compressor, evaporator coil and condenser coil, 61 months in total. Wine Guardian's Pro ducted installation manual describes a two-year term instead; the warranty documents are the governing instruments. Warranty, returns, service and product registration all run through Wine Guardian as the manufacturer.
