PRO SERIES · Water-Cooled Ducted Unit

Wine Guardian DP88WC Water-Cooled Ducted Unit Rated 5,000 to 9,600 BTU/h at 80°F Ambient

The Wine Guardian DP88WC water-cooled ducted wine cellar cooling unit is a self-contained ducted wine cellar cooling unit rated by Wine Guardian at 5,000 to 9,600 BTU/h for spaces of 850 to 4,500 cubic feet, with the cellar heat rejected into a water loop instead of into the air around the cabinet.

It is the water-cooled configuration of the Pro ducted DP88: the same 41.5 in self-contained cabinet, fitted at the factory with an integral water-cooled condensing coil and a water-regulating valve. Wine Guardian states that warm condenser air connections are not required, which is the whole reason to specify this unit rather than the air-cooled DP88, and it builds these systems for geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications that can supply a year-round source of water. Capacity is not the reason to choose it. Heat rejection is.

Wine Guardian places the DP88WC in its Pro ducted tier, which its Ducted Pro product brochure describes as ideal for low-temperature air conditioning from 52°F to 70°F rather than for wine storage alone. As an authorized Wine Guardian dealer we publish the manufacturer’s own data for this model and say plainly which rows Wine Guardian does not publish against the DP88WC code, so the specification can be checked before a quote is requested. This guidance is general and intended to help narrow the selection. Final sizing, water supply, drain, electrical requirements and configuration should be confirmed with Wine Guardian’s official documentation and a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor. The specification mistakes contractors most often make on wine cellar projects are worth working through before that conversation.

The Water Side

What Water Loop Does the DP88WC Need?

The DP88WC needs a year-round loop that delivers water to the condenser between 45°F and 85°F. Wine Guardian gives that as the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature in its Pro ducted installation and operation manual, and warns that if the water temperature entering the unit is above 85°F you risk tripping the high-pressure switch.

45°F to 85°F entering water

Wine Guardian builds these systems for geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications, states that they require a year-round source of water, and does not recommend a water-cooled system on a city water supply.

What the Building Has to Provide

  • A recirculating or natural source. Wine Guardian’s DP88WC page names geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications. Its Pro ducted manual states that it does not recommend using a water-cooled system if you are using a city water supply, and Wine Guardian separately notes that the amount of water per day can be sizable once the cooling cycle is taken into account, which is why a recycled source is the right starting point.
  • Water inside 45°F to 85°F, in every season. A loop that is seasonal, throttled, or already shared with another load is the failure mode to design out before the unit is specified. Above 85°F entering water, Wine Guardian warns you risk tripping the high-pressure switch.
  • Copper straight tube connections. Wine Guardian states that water-cooled units have copper straight tube connections for both the cooling water inlet and the outlet, so the plumbing trade belongs on the job rather than designed around.
  • A water-regulating valve the unit already owns. Wine Guardian supplies the DP88WC with an integral factory-configured water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve, so the loop is modulated inside the machine rather than by a valve the installer has to add and balance.
  • A flow rate the contractor confirms. Wine Guardian publishes no flow rate, water-side pressure drop or connection size against the DP88WC model code. Take those three figures from Wine Guardian directly and have the installing contractor confirm the loop can carry them alongside whatever else it serves.

On the numbers this page does not print: Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted specifications sheet does carry a water-cooled condenser section, but that block prints exactly two data columns, with no model heading over either of them and no third column of any kind, while the document’s own header reads Model Number DP25 DP50 and the string DP88WC appears nowhere in it. Two of its three rows print the same value in both columns. There is no DP88WC column to read, so a water figure on this page would not be mis-attributed, it would be invented. The flow rate, pressure drop and connection size are routed to Wine Guardian and to the installing contractor instead.

Fit Check

Is the DP88WC the Right Water-Cooled Step for Your Cellar?

The DP88WC suits a wine cellar or conditioned room of 850 to 4,500 cubic feet in a building that already runs a year-round water loop, and where the mechanical space has no practical way to absorb or exhaust condenser heat. Buildings that run such a loop are usually commercial, and a worked commercial wine room and the climate control it was given sets out the loads a hospitality space puts on the system.

✓ Ideal For

  • Wine rooms and conditioned spaces of roughly 850 to 4,500 cubic feet
  • Buildings with a geothermal loop, a cooling tower or a lake source already in place and running year-round
  • Mechanical rooms, closets and basements with no route for discharging warm condenser air
  • Installations where the cabinet sits outside the room and connects through 10 in ductwork on the evaporator side
  • Projects that want the Pro ducted tier, which Wine Guardian rates for conditioning from 52°F to 70°F rather than for wine storage alone
  • Specialty storage beyond wine, which Wine Guardian names for the DP88 platform alongside wine cellars

✕ Consider Another Model If

  • The only water available is a metered city supply, which Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted manual does not recommend for a water-cooled system
  • Entering water cannot be held between 45°F and 85°F through every season
  • There is a ventilated space that can absorb and exhaust condenser heat, in which case the air-cooled DP88 is the simpler path with no plumbing and no loop
  • The room is comfortably under about 3,000 cubic feet, where the DP50WC is the smaller water-cooled step
  • The room runs past about 4,500 cubic feet, where the DP200WC is the next water-cooled step
  • You are buying on capacity alone, since the water-cooled configuration changes where the heat goes rather than how much cooling you get
Key Features

DP88WC Key Features on the Pro Ducted Water-Cooled Cabinet

The DP88WC pairs the Pro ducted cabinet with an integral factory-configured water-cooled condensing coil and water-regulating valve, copper straight tube water connections, low ambient protection as standard and enhanced refrigeration controls.

Feature What it means for your cellar
Integral water-cooled condensing coil The DP88WC rejects the cellar’s heat into a water loop instead of into the surrounding air, so the mechanical space never has to absorb or exhaust that heat. Wine Guardian configures the coil at the factory rather than leaving it to the installer.
Integral water-regulating valve Wine Guardian fits the water-regulating valve inside the unit, so the loop is modulated by the machine rather than by a valve the installer has to add and balance.
Accepts entering water from 45°F to 85°F Wine Guardian gives 45°F to 85°F as the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature, which is wide enough for a geothermal loop, a cooling tower or a lake source across the seasons.
Copper straight tube water connections Wine Guardian states that water-cooled units have copper straight tube connections for both the cooling water inlet and the outlet, which keeps the plumbing reachable for service after the unit is set.
No warm condenser air connections required Wine Guardian states that warm condenser air connections are not required on this unit, so there is no condenser duct run, no louvre and no adjacent space that has to take the heat.
Self-contained, fully ductable cabinet Evaporator, fans, compressor, condenser and controls sit in one cabinet outside the cellar and connect through ductwork, so the wine room stays quiet and every inch of it stays available for storage.
Additional condensing-section duct collars Wine Guardian notes that additional duct collar connections are located on the condensing section of this cooling unit, which gives the installer more than one route out of the cabinet.
Low ambient protection as standard Wine Guardian lists low ambient protection among the DP88WC’s standard features, so the unit is built to keep operating when the space around the cabinet runs cold rather than only when it runs warm.
Enhanced refrigeration controls Wine Guardian states that the DP88WC carries enhanced refrigeration controls and is compatible with modern smart thermostats.
Optional factory electric heater Wine Guardian’s DP88WC page states that the heater option protects wine cellars from dangerously low temperatures, with adjustable activation from 2°F to 6°F below your setpoint. It is ordered as a separate factory configuration of the same unit.
Optional humidification The unit controls temperature. An integrated or freestanding Wine Guardian humidifier is what raises a cellar to 55% to 65% relative humidity.
Pro ducted tier Wine Guardian places the DP88WC in its Pro ducted line, which its Ducted Pro product brochure describes as ideal for low-temperature air conditioning from 52°F to 70°F rather than for wine storage alone.

Built-in protection: a high-pressure switch stops the unit rather than letting it run on water that has gone too warm, which is why Wine Guardian sets 85°F as the top of the entering-water range.

How Quiet Is It

How Quiet Is the DP88WC Without a Condenser Air Stream?

Wine Guardian publishes no decibel rating for any of its ducted units, so the honest answer for the DP88WC is structural rather than a number. Two things work in its favour: the cabinet installs outside the wine room and connects through insulated ductwork, and because the condenser is water-cooled there is no warm condenser air to move, duct or exhaust at all.

Why the Water-Cooled Configuration Is the Quiet One

  • The cabinet sits in a utility room, closet or adjacent space, away from the cellar.
  • Heat leaves through a water loop, so there is no condenser fan discharge to place, duct or silence.
  • Wine Guardian states that water-cooled units require no hot air venting and so offer flexibility in their mounting location, which it names as an advantage where the noise from a condenser fan would be objectionable.
  • Flexible ductwork absorbs air noise on the evaporator side, and sound drops further at every turn in a duct run.
  • Any dealer or comparison chart quoting a decibel figure for a Wine Guardian ducted unit is not quoting the manufacturer.

Evaporator and condenser fan motor sizeNot reproduced here. The Pro ducted specifications sheet prints byte-identical figures on both rows; take them from Wine Guardian
Nominal compressorNot reproduced here. The sheet carries this row only under its air-cooled performance blocks, with no DP88WC column
Capacity at varying condenser inlet air temperaturesNot applicable. The performance ladder on the Pro ducted specifications sheet is measured against condenser inlet air and belongs to the air-cooled DP88; a water-cooled condenser has no inlet air
Dimensions (L x W x H)41.5 in x 22.5 in x 19 in, as printed and ordered on Wine Guardian’s own DP88WC page. The Dimensional Data for 60Hz Models table in the Wine Guardian Pro ducted installation manual labels the same cabinet in the opposite order, as width 41.5 in, depth 22.4 in and height 18.85 in, on the Chassis B row that covers DP50, DP88 and DP200. The Pro ducted specifications sheet is not the source for this row: its physical block carries only two value columns, headed DP25 and DP50, and no DP88 column of any kind
Weight125 lbs, from the Dimensional Data for 60Hz Models table in the Wine Guardian Pro ducted installation manual, whose model-number header reads DP25 then DP50 / DP88 / DP200 and whose weight row reads 80 then 125 / 125 / 206
Condensate drain connection0.50 in inside diameter, gravity drain, with the built-in internal trap the Pro ducted manual describes
Minimum ductwork, evaporator side10 in round, from the Ductwork Diameters table in the Wine Guardian Pro ducted installation manual, whose row is labelled DP50/DP88 and gives 10 in on the evaporator side. The Pro ducted specifications sheet is not the source for this row: its physical block carries only two value columns, headed DP25 and DP50, and no DP88 column of any kind
Ductwork, condenser sideNot applicable. Heat leaves through the water loop rather than a condenser air stream, and Wine Guardian states that warm condenser air connections are not required
Low ambient protectionStandard
ControlsEnhanced refrigeration controls, compatible with modern smart thermostats
Sound ratingWine Guardian publishes no decibel rating for its ducted units
Agency approvalApproved by ETL according to UL 1995 and CSA safety standards
InstallationWine Guardian requires installation and maintenance by qualified personnel familiar with local codes and regulations
Warranty25 months parts, 13 months labor

On the suppressed rows: Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted specifications sheet is headed Model Number DP25 DP50 and carries no DP88WC column. Its evaporator and condenser fan motor rows print byte-identical figures, its minimum-circuit row is printed in a combined heat / no heat cell whose pair inverts on this model, its electric-heat cell repeats across two model groups, its heating-mode current pair repeats across the same two groups, and its water-cooled condenser block has no model headings at all. Rather than attribute a neighbouring column’s number to this unit, those rows route you to Wine Guardian and to a licensed electrician.

On the capacity table: the performance ladder printed on the Pro ducted specifications sheet is measured against condenser inlet air temperature and belongs to the air-cooled DP88. A water-cooled condenser has no inlet air, so that ladder is not reproduced on this page and no operating envelope should be read from it. The headline capacity keeps the condition Wine Guardian does publish for this line, 80°F ambient, which is an ambient condition and not an entering-water temperature.

On the warranty: Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted installation manual describes a two-year term from the date of invoicing, while its current standard and Platinum warranty documents give 25 months parts and 13 months labor, and the Platinum option gives 25 months parts and labor plus a 36-month parts-only extension on the compressor, evaporator coil and condenser coil, 61 months in total. The warranty documents are the governing instruments and are what is published above.

Compare Across the Line

How the DP88WC Compares With the Air-Cooled DP88 and the DP50WC

The DP88WC and the air-cooled DP88 are the same Pro ducted cabinet covering the same 850 to 4,500 cubic feet; the only question that separates them is where the heat is allowed to go. The DP50WC is the smaller water-cooled step for rooms below this one, and all three sit inside the wider Wine Guardian ducted wine cellar cooling range.

Decision factor DP88WC (this unit) DP88 air-cooled DP50WC water-cooled

Unit weight and cabinet length 125 lbs, 41.5 in 125 lbs, 41.5 in 125 lbs, 41.5 in

Best for / not ideal for: choose the DP88WC when the room is roughly 850 to 4,500 cubic feet and the building already runs a year-round loop holding entering water between 45°F and 85°F, or when there is simply nowhere to send warm condenser air; choose the air-cooled DP88 when a ventilated space can absorb that heat, since it covers the same volume band and needs no plumbing and no loop; choose the DP50WC when the room is comfortably under about 3,000 cubic feet. The DP88WC is not ideal where the only water is a metered city supply, which Wine Guardian’s Pro ducted manual does not recommend for a water-cooled system, where the loop cannot hold 45°F to 85°F through the whole year, or where the buyer is looking for extra capacity, since the water-cooled configuration changes heat rejection rather than output.

Other Pro Ducted and Water-Cooled Models

If you are still narrowing the configuration, the full range of Wine Guardian cooling units that reject their heat to a water loop sets the DP88WC against every other water-cooled model, and the cooling units for cellars of 2,200 to 4,500 cubic feet gather every configuration that suits a room at the upper end of this unit’s range.

Frequently Asked Questions

DP88WC Water-Cooled Ducted Questions

Who has to be on site to install the DP88WC?
Plan on the refrigeration, electrical and plumbing trades. Wine Guardian's own Pro ducted installation and operation manual states that installation and maintenance of this equipment is to be performed only by qualified personnel who are familiar with local codes and regulations and are experienced with this type of equipment. The DP88WC is ducted on the evaporator side, hard-wired, and plumbed into a water loop through copper straight tube connections, so a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor should confirm the final installation design.
Does the DP88WC need a dedicated water loop, or can it run on a city water supply?
It needs a recirculating or natural year-round loop. Wine Guardian's Pro ducted manual states that it does not recommend using a water-cooled system if you are using a city water supply, and Wine Guardian's own DP88WC page names geothermal, cooling tower and lake water applications and states that these systems require a year-round source of water. Wine Guardian's water-cooled ducted line page names geothermal sources, cooling towers and year-round water sources, and the manual is the installation instrument this page follows.
What happens if the water feeding the DP88WC warms past 85°F or the supply stops?
The unit protects itself before the cellar warms up. Wine Guardian gives the safe operating range of the condenser inlet water temperature as 45°F to 85°F and warns that if the water temperature entering the unit is above 85°F you risk tripping the high-pressure switch, which then needs attention before the unit will run again. A licensed HVAC professional should confirm that the loop can hold entering water inside that range in every season before the DP88WC is specified.
How much water does a water-cooled unit like the DP88WC use?
Enough that the source has to be designed, not assumed. Wine Guardian states that water consumption varies by unit size and capacity, and that considering the frequency of the cooling cycle the amount of water per day can be sizable, which is why it points these systems at applications where the water is recycled. That is the practical reason a geothermal loop, a cooling tower or a lake source suits the DP88WC and a metered supply does not.
Why does this page not print a water flow rate, pressure drop or pipe size for the DP88WC?
Because Wine Guardian publishes none against this model code. The Pro ducted specifications sheet does carry a water-cooled condenser block, but that block prints only two data columns, has no model heading over either of them, and has no third column at all, while the document's own header reads Model Number DP25 DP50 and the string DP88WC appears nowhere in it. Two of its three rows print the same value in both columns. Any figure taken from it and attached to the DP88WC would be invented rather than sourced, so the flow rate, pressure drop and connection size are routed to Wine Guardian and to the installing contractor.
Is the DP88WC the same unit as the D088WC, the DS088 or the SP88?
No, they are four different products. The DP88WC is the Pro ducted, water-cooled, self-contained unit covered on this page. The D088WC is the Sentinel ducted water-cooled unit, the DS088 is a Sentinel ducted split system in two sections, and the SP88 is the Pro ducted split. Only the DP88WC combines the Pro ducted cabinet with water-cooled heat rejection in one enclosure, and the four are quoted separately.
How much cooling does the DP88WC deliver, and under what condition is it rated?
Wine Guardian rates the DP88WC at 5,000 to 9,600 BTU/h and recommends it for spaces of 850 to 4,500 cubic feet. Wine Guardian's Pro Series page and its water-cooled ducted line page both state that cooling capacity is rated at 80°F ambient. That is an ambient condition, not an entering-water temperature, so it is a separate requirement from the 45°F to 85°F loop range. This guidance is general and intended to help narrow the selection; final sizing should be confirmed with Wine Guardian's official documentation and a licensed HVAC professional or qualified contractor.
Why does the DP88WC show a call for price rather than a checkout price?
Because it is configured before it is quoted. The DP88WC is ordered as a base unit or with the factory electric heat option, and the loop, ductwork and controls are settled with the project before a figure is meaningful. Tell us the room volume, the construction, and what water source the building has and what temperature it holds through the year, and we will confirm the configuration with you. Wine Guardian is the manufacturer; this store is an authorized dealer.
What does Wine Guardian's warranty cover on the DP88WC?
Wine Guardian's standard warranty runs 25 months on parts and 13 months on labor. The optional Platinum warranty runs 25 months on parts and labor plus a 36-month parts-only extension on the compressor, evaporator coil and condenser coil, 61 months in total. Wine Guardian's Pro ducted installation manual instead describes a two-year term from the date of invoicing; the warranty documents are the governing instruments and are what is published here. Warranty, returns, service and product registration all run through Wine Guardian as the manufacturer.
